Use a written inquiry first. Describe the project, dates needed, style, and budget. A vague request wastes everyone's time. Good session players book weeks in advance, so plan ahead.

Rates and Payment

Session rates vary by musician level and instrument. A sideman might charge $50–150/hour; a top NYC session bassist could be $200–500+. Agree on your rate upfront and in writing. Will you pay per hour, per session, or a flat fee for the full project?

Be prepared to cover travel costs if the session happens far from them. Many session players invoice after the session, so have a payment method ready. Tipping for great work often leads to musicians taking priority when you book them next.

Work-For-Hire Agreements

Have a simple agreement stating that the musician is being hired for a specific recording and that you retain the master recording rights. Most session players expect this — it's standard practice. Make it clear whether the musician gets any writing credit or royalties.

A one-page document prevents confusion later. Nothing legal needs to be fancy; clarity matters more than fancy language.

Direction and Feedback

Come prepared with clear, specific direction. "It needs more soul" doesn't help; "try laying back behind the beat slightly, like the pocket feel in the reference track" does. Play reference tracks before they start tracking.

If you need takes, ask politely. Most session musicians deliver multiple takes automatically, but communicating expectations is crucial. Thank them genuinely — session work is often thankless, and a positive vibe gets you better results.
