Playlist Pitching Strategy

How to pitch editorial, algorithmic, and independent playlists.

7 minMarch 2026Intermediate

Three Types of Playlists

Playlist placement is one of the most powerful drivers of streams. There are three distinct types of playlists, each requiring a different pitching strategy. Editorial playlists are curated by Spotify's team and include major playlists like New Music Daily, Discover Weekly, and genre-specific curations. Algorithmic playlists like Discover Weekly and Release Radar are generated by Spotify's algorithm based on user listening history. Independent playlists are curated by music lovers, industry professionals, and micro-influencers outside of Spotify's official team.

Each type offers unique advantages. Editorial placement provides prestige and mass exposure. Algorithmic placement reaches listeners based on taste compatibility. Independent playlist placement often comes from genuine fans or tastemakers in your niche.

Editorial Pitching Through DSPs

Most DSPs (Digital Service Providers) like DistroKid or CD Baby have built-in pitching tools. Use these to submit your track to Spotify's editorial team. Submit at least 4 weeks before release to give editors time to evaluate. Include a strong pitch statement that explains your sound, target audience, and why this track matters.

Be specific about playlist recommendations. If your track is indie folk, suggest pitching to playlists like Discover Weekly Folk or Indie Arrivals rather than hoping for algorithmic placement. Research which official playlists have recently added similar artists and reference those.

Independent Curator Outreach

Independent playlists often have more dedicated listeners than massive editorial ones. Identify curators whose playlists align with your music by searching Spotify directly. Look for playlists with 5k–100k followers where listeners are engaged and the curation is thoughtful.

Once you've identified curators, find their contact information through their curator profile link or social media. Write a personalized pitch explaining why your track fits their playlist. Keep it brief — two to three sentences maximum. Include a link to your track and any relevant context about your project. Most independent curators appreciate direct, respectful outreach.

Playlist pitching services that charge fees are mostly scams or ineffective. Services claiming they'll guarantee placement on major playlists for a fee should be avoided entirely. No legitimate service can guarantee editorial placement — Spotify doesn't sell it. Focus your energy on organic pitching through official channels and genuine curator relationships.
