Label Services Deals Explained

The middle-ground deal between full label signing and total DIY.

What Label Services Offer

Label services sit between full-on label deals and complete independence. You retain ownership of your master recordings while paying a fee for professional services. This is the sweet spot for artists who want infrastructure without giving up their masters.

Services typically include:

  • Professional distribution to all streaming platforms
  • Marketing and promotional support
  • A&R guidance and production connections
  • Accounting and royalty administration
  • International rights management

You Keep Masters

Here's the defining feature: you own your masters. The label services company doesn't take a stake in your recordings. You're licensing them distribution rights, not signing them away. After the contract ends, all your masters come back to you fully.

This changes everything strategically. You can shop deals later, license to sync opportunities, or move platforms without renegotiating.

Fee Structure

Label services operate on a commission model, typically 20–30% of streaming revenue. Some charge flat annual fees instead ($1,000–$5,000 yearly). A few use hybrid models—small upfront fee plus commission.

Always calculate the break-even point:

  • At what streaming threshold does commission hurt more than a flat fee?
  • Can you renegotiate if you hit certain milestone plays?
