Drum Programming Basics

Programming drums that feel human without being a drummer.

Humanization Tricks

Perfect timing sounds robotic. Add subtle timing variations by moving drum hits 10–30 milliseconds off the grid, but only for certain hits (usually the snare and hi-hats). Velocity should vary too—not every kick hits equally hard. Most DAWs include humanization plugins; use them as a starting point, then tweak by ear.

Quantize Percentage

Instead of quantizing all the way to the grid (100%), set quantize to 70–85%. This keeps the pocket feel of your playing while cleaning up obvious timing mistakes. It's the sweet spot between human and mechanical.

Layering Samples

A single drum hit rarely sounds impressive. Layer a kick with another kick, adding weight and presence. Combine snare samples: a tight pop on top of a roomy crack. High-hats benefit from layering a close mic hit with an overhead. Each layer adds complexity and makes drums feel more real.

Reference Grooves

Study grooves from songs you love. Isolate the drum track and listen to swing, pocket, and timing. How early or late are the hi-hats? When does the snare hit relative to the kick? Recreate the feel in your programming—not the exact notes, but the rhythmic personality. This trains your ear and improves your instincts faster than any tutorial.
