Co-Writing Sessions: The Nashville Model
How professional songwriters work together.
The 3-Way Write Model
The Nashville standard: three writers, one session, three-hour window. This structure works:
- Typically: one lyricist, two musicians or one lyricist/musician and one pure musician
- Pace: rough out a concept in hour one, develop the chorus in hour two, finish and polish in hour three
- Output: aim for one complete song per session (or 2โ3 sketches if exploring ideas)
Three minds create friction that sparks creativity โ two often leads to compromise, four or more spreads focus too thin.
Session Etiquette
Professional co-writing has unwritten rules:
- Punctuality: Show up on time, fully charged and caffeinated
- Listen actively: Don't immediately dismiss ideas; build on them
- Contribute equally: Don't ghost mid-song or mentally check out
- Stay focused: One song at a time โ finish it or park it before switching concepts
- Leave ego at the door: A "bad" idea from someone else is just feedback, not personal criticism
The best co-writers know when to push and when to yield.
Equal Splits by Default
Unless negotiated otherwise, splits are typically equal โ each writer owns 33.3% of the song. This includes:
- Publishing share (the composition rights): equally divided among writers
- Performance royalty share: equally divided
- Mechanical royalties: equally divided
If someone contributes more (wrote both lyrics and music, for example), that's explicitly discussed and documented on a split sheet before the session ends.
Finding Co-Writers
Where to find collaborators:
- Songwriter meetups: Nashville, Los Angeles, and Brooklyn have regular open co-writing events
- Online platforms: Hookpad, BeatStars, SoundTrap connect remote writers
- Publisher networks: If signed to a publishing deal, publishers connect you with compatible writers
- Studio hangouts: Regular collaborators meet through sessions and develop working relationships
- Genre communities: Reddit, Discord, and local forums connect writers by style
The best co-writing relationships develop over time โ you'll recognize your collaborative partners and keep working with them.
